Aging with Grace

As a Holistic Esthetician helping my clients age with grace is a large part of my job and I am asked questions often on the topic. Aging is a natural process in life. Each year is a gift, and with that, we must find and appreciate the natural beauty in every stage of life. However, there are non-invasive ways to help ourselves age in a more graceful way. So, how does one age with grace? This is unique to each individual, but there are certain things we all can do daily to help our skin stay healthy. The products we apply daily to our skin, the amount of exercise we get, our water intake, what foods we choose to fuel our bodies with, and of course, genetics, all play a role in the way our bodies and our skin age. Here are my top tips for aging with grace, from a skin professional’s point of view.
#1 Wear a daily non-chemical sunscreen, containing zinc oxide as the active ingredients. The sun causes approximately 80% to 85% of our aging. Chronic sun exposure breaks down and weakens our collagen, causing wrinkles and sagging skin at a much earlier age and is also guilty of causing sunspots, also referred to as age spots. For this reason, a daily facial sunscreen is hands down the best anti-aging treatment out there! However, I do not recommend using just any sunscreen. Typical chemical based sunscreens are absorbed into the skin, which in and of itself is a problem. The sun then creates a reaction with the chemicals, breaking down the chemicals and making them ineffective. This is why it is advised that we reapply sunscreen multiple times per day. Zinc based sunscreens, on the other hand, are natural and mineral based. Zinc sits on top of the skin and is not absorbed, yet blocks the suns UV rays. #2 Be educated on what is in your skincare products I hate to sound like a nagging mother saying, “eat your vegetables”, but I can’t help but say it over and over again; know the ingredients that are in your cosmetic products! How many daily products do you use? Are your products filled with cheap fillers, chemicals, irritants, and toxins? These products create inflammation and inflammation over time is known to create wrinkles. Every product we use is automatically absorbed into our skin and goes straight to the bloodstream, so just as we are encouraged to feed ourselves healthy, whole foods; let’s take pride in doing the same for our skin. This is why I suggest using high-quality ingredients, like essential oils, herbs, and antioxidants, all of which help brighten the skin and fight wrinkles. An easy rule of thumb is; if you can eat the product, you can apply it!
#3 Treat yourself to facials either every month or every three months. Your older self-thanks you! Facials increase blood flow of nutrients to the facial tissue and the exfoliation process during a facial gets rid of dead skin cells, which lightens age spots and helps your skin reflect light. Regular facials also help your skin to absorb more nutrients from your products by reducing dead skin cell build up. All of the above will lead to less wrinkles and helps our skin to maintain its luster and shine.
By taking care of our skin from a young age, paying attention to what ingredients are in our daily products and taking the time to give ourselves self-care, we all can embrace the life journey and beautiful process of aging with grace. And remember, you are beautiful!
