Are You Jade Rolling? The Inside Opinion From a Holistic Esthetician

The latest buzz in the beauty industry is all about the Jade rollers, and everyone keeps asking my expert opinion on them. “Are they something I should invest in?” “Should I use them daily?” “Are they going to help me age better?” The true answer lies within your own skincare routine, but let’s talk purpose, history, quality, and what I like about them.

Jade rollers are an ancient Chinese beauty tool that date back centuries ago. The green stone itself (jade) is known for its calming, balancing, and peace giving power. Rolling the stone along our facial structure increases circulation, while helping products to penetrate deep into our skin. It also brings blood flow and life to our muscular tissue and helps to drain our lymphatic system, which aids in carrying out bacteria, boosting our health, and reducing puffiness. I use green jade rollers in my Esthetic practice, mostly for their cooling and soothing effect they have on the skin. I also love to apply pressure with other hand-held stones on various pressure point areas during my practice and find my clients absolutely love it.

Although they are a great addition to my services, I do not personally keep one in my home. This is not to say that in the future I will not decide to, but my main purpose for personal use would be for the lymphatic drainage benefit, however I perform lymphatic facial massage on myself already without a tool. You can find jade rollers on Amazon as well as many individual retailers that may range anywhere from $3 to $90, confusing huh? The more expensive ones claim to be made with more quality materials that will not rust or contain a higher quality stone. My opinion is avoiding both the cheap and expensive options. Buyer beware however, there is fake jade being sold out there! Serpentine is imitation jade, you want to identify Nephrite and Jadeite in the product list when looking for real jade rollers. By reading the website and reviews, you should have no problem finding a good jade roller for a middle of the road price. Upkeep is easy, you can clean jade rollers with soap and water just make sure to dry the metal well after washing to prevent rust. I also recommend storing your rollers in sea salt to reenergize the stones!

If jade rollers sound like something you will use in your beauty routine at least once a week, I’d say make the investment! I would recommend applying them over your serum or best moisturizer to help penetrate the products. On the other hand, if you for see a future of it sitting in the back of your drawer collecting dust, save your money and work with your hands to stimulate blood flow, penetrate product, and decrease puffiness…after all, my motto is “Our hands are our greatest tools.”
