Why Choose Holistic Skin Care

Written by: Lauren Ramey, Holistic Esthetician

My name is Lauren Ramey and I am a holistic Esthetician, meaning I work with non-toxic products and I do not practice invasive skin care treatments. What makes holistic and organic non-toxic treatments unique to the esthetic industry? Why choose to go the holistic skin care route? See my reasons below. “It is unfortunate, that laws governing cosmetics and personal care products do not prohibit the use of known cancer-causing chemicals.”

Ten years ago my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer, after educating herself through naturopathic medicine, she remains a survivor. It was then that I realized that what we put in and on our bodies throughout our lives can create the diseases and symptoms that we see today. EVERYTHING WE APPLY TO OUR SKIN MATTERS.

Our skin is more susceptible to toxic chemicals than our digestive system. Our digestive system has a line of defense to help wean out toxins, such as the kidneys and liver. Our skin, on the other hand, has no defense system; everything that is applied to it is automatically absorbed into the blood stream. Did you know every “square inch of our skin contains, millions of cells, 8 feet of blood vessels, 1,300 nerve endings, 650 sweat glands, and 100 oil glands?”  Toxic substances enter the body through these cells, vessels, and glands.

Many product lines on the market today have toxic ingredients that are known to create inflammation. Inflammation over time is scientifically proven to create disease and inflammation in the esthetic industry leads to wrinkles. This is why I choose to work with and use on myself a professional, 100% organic, non-toxic, and active product line.

We each hold the power to be a defensive system for our skin. Take control of what is being applied to your skin and make sure you are not using chemicals that damage your skin and your body as a whole. Instead, pair yourself with a highly active, antioxidant line that will fight free radicals and contribute to a healthier and more attractive you.

Below I have listed some of the main toxic ingredients that you see in the cosmetic and skin care industry, what they are and why you should not apply them to your skin. It is never too late to start taking care of yourself. Maybe, today is that day!

Parabens- are preservatives that mimic estrogen and are used widely in the cosmetic industry. They have been linked to breast cancer, lower testosterone/sperm count levels, infertility, and more. Watch out for any ingredient listed with paraben at the end. (Example: butylparaben)

Fragrance/Perfume- Federal law doesn’t require companies to list on product labels any of the chemicals in their fragrance mixture. It may smell good, but just in that one word (fragrance) on average there are 14 chemicals. (source: EWG.org)

Talc- A French chalk, that is similar in composition to asbestos. It is a known to cause lung problems and ovarian cancer as well as clog pores and lead to acne.

Petrolatum- For example, mineral oil and paraffin, are know to cause skin allergies, irritation, and acne. Petrolatum actually impairs the skin’s natural ability to release toxins, by coating the skin and not letting anything out.

I use Elina Skin Care products in all of my treatments and we also sell their line here at Grand Rapids Natural Health. Call us today at 616-264-6556 to learn more.

In good health,
