Grand Rapids Natural Health, Jen Bumstead

Front Desk Assistant & Phlebotomist

Ever since I was young, I knew that I wanted to go into a career where I could help others. I also have always had a passion for health and wellness. This encouraged me to pursue a degree in the health sciences at Grand Valley with the hopes to become a health care practitioner. As I got deeper into my education, I saw the realities of Western medicine and realized that this style of treatment may not be how I want to practice. My own health journey contributed to this realization as well. Through my experience as a patient at Grand Rapids Natural Health, I found more relief of my medical issues than I ever had seeing allopathic doctors. This also showed me that there are other career options out there that will allow me to practice in a way that will help people to truly feel well.

Last fall, I interned at Grand Rapids Natural Health and was able to shadow practitioners as well as learn the administrative side of the business. After my internship was completed, I was given the opportunity to join the team as a front desk assistant. One of my favorite parts of working at the office is seeing the positive health changes that people experience once their voices are heard. The office is also an extremely tranquil environment, which is a stark contrast between the fast-paced madness that I’m used to in a doctor’s office. It is just the right place to learn and challenge myself without being overly stressed.

While I am still unsure what my future holds as a practitioner, I am very happy with my current position. I am exposed to health care on a daily basis and have the opportunity to communicate with others. I am also learning about preventative health and alternative treatments that will be useful for whichever career I decide. I look forward to working with you while you are on your wellness journey!
