Integrative Medicine  and Cardiology Physician Consultations with Dave Johnson, MD

What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine arose out of conventional medicine in order to provide consumers a more compassionate, healing-oriented medicine that takes into account the whole person including body, mind and spirit and not simply focus on disease management. Integrative physicians partner with their patients, and together evaluate all available options, starting with the most natural, least invasive approaches to facilitate the body's natural healing response. Integrative physicians provide recommendations and ongoing structured support for all factors that influence health, wellness and disease, which include care of the mind, body, spirit and community. In addition, our integrative medicine physicians are personally committed to the ongoing process of self-exploration and self-development. Integrative medicine consultations may be particularly beneficial for patients seeking guidance in prevention and optimal health promotion, as well as the treatment of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. Our integrative medicine team also specializes in women’s health, integrative nutrition, gastrointestinal issues, dermatologic and other physical conditions, and well as psychological or stress-related conditions.

What is Integrative Cardiology?

Integrative cardiology is the evaluation of the whole person and all potential contributing factors that lead to cardiovascular disease. Once these are explored, then choices can be influenced that direct the journey towards healing and wholeness. A combination of traditional Western cardiology principles will be integrated with nutritional, behavioral and mind-body medicine modalities with the aim of promoting health and wellbeing.

Dr. Johnson is uniquely qualified since he is a board certified cardiologist with formal training in integrative medicine through the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, founded by Dr. Andrew Weil. He is the only formally trained cardiologist in Michigan with such credentials.

What Will Happen At My Appointments?

During the first visit, the physician will take an in-depth history that reviews your standard medical history, while also gathering additional health information such as your diet, level of activity, sleep quality, and sources of stress to create a picture of the factors in your life that affect your health and well-being. During this first visit the physician may perform a focused physical examination while also demonstrating some basic self-care techniques. As a result of this visit additional information and diagnostic testing may be ordered allowing the physician to get a more comprehensive picture of your health and wellbeing.

The second and subsequent appointments are generally shorter and based upon your goals. The physician will review results of any labs or testing, review your progress since the previous visit, and provide additional recommendations for improving your health. These recommendations may include diet changes, exercise, stress management techniques, sleep improvement, herbal medicines or dietary supplements, and medications or surgeries when necessary.

Additionally, Dr. Johnson may consider referral to other therapies such as naturopathic medicine counseling,  nutrition and health coaching, acupuncture, massage, or energy medicine. A referral into our individualized Integrative Health and Healing Program may also be considered that might include many of the complementary and self care approaches noted above.
