His clinical experience includes an internship at Emperor’s College and externships at Daniel Freeman Hospital and the UCLA Arthur Ashe Center. He has worked at the St. Mary’s Wege Institute and The Bronson Hospital Integrative Health Program. Stephen founded Acupuncture of West Michigan in 2000 and has been providing acupuncture to the Grand Rapids community since. He treats a wide range of conditions with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs.

“My interest in health started at a young age. I know that conventional treatments can be very helpful for most people. My family uses it and I have a ‘best of both worlds’ attitude when it comes to my patients. But for some, the side effects are just too severe to make the treatment worthwhile. ‘There must be another option’, I thought.” – Stephen Durell

A few years later when Stephen was pre-med at Michigan State University, he found himself interested in books by doctors that were teaching people about lifestyle medicine, herbs, and nutrition. He decided his practice was going to be a mix of conventional medicine and these ‘newer’ ideas about how to help people get better. He quickly changed his plans and soon enrolled in a graduate level program to study Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. The program required him to move to Los Angeles where he studied this medicine for four years.

“I wanted to become the kind of medical provider that could help when nothing else works. I wanted to offer hope to people. Through my study of Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine and later Functional Medicine, I learned that our bodies have evolved to heal and adapt to most things. If we have chronic pain or symptoms, it is our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. To take advantage of your body’s amazing healing abilities, you simply need to take away the things that limit healing and add some of the things that promote it.”- Stephen Durell
